Vehicle Registration and Identification in Jabodetabek Vicinity

What will you think when you see this license plate? : B 1295 TAD. I bet, you may only wonder of nothing about this license plate. All you know only this license plate comes from Jakarta, just that, nothing more. but do you know that, this license plate can reveal more than just a location where the car is registered? Moreover, you can differ which is the original license plate and which is the fake one. I've been learning this for quite a long time and I'd like to share to you. What is my point of sharing this? There is one point which becomes my basis for sharing this. The important point is the security, if, for example, you're being followed while driving, do notice the license plate, and if possible write it down. If you're still followed, you can analyze where the car from and predict who this follower(s) are based on the information you have esp. about your friends or enemies-going-to-be. Okay then, without getting more chit-chat, I'll explain it to you.

In Jadetabek vicinity, the vehicles (cars and motorcycles) are obliged to use a pair of original license plate in front and rear. This license plate generally has these pattern :

  • L NNNN XY
  • L NNNN XYZ
L : Provincial/City Code, For Jadetabek, it is B.
N : Registration Number, this number can consist as little as one digit up to four digits with this pattern as the identification :
  • 1-1999 : for cars (normally for new car, registered in 2009 onwards)
  • 2000-2999; 8000-8999 for cars (mostly registered before 2009 and some new cars registered in 2009 onwards)
  • 3000-3999; 6000-6999: for motorcycles (for registration in 2008 onwards)
  • 4000-5999: for motorcycle (for older motorcycles registered before 2008)
  • 7000-7999 : for buses and some cars; the cars which use this number are registered before 2009
  • 9000-9999: for transport vehicle (Trucks, Pick Ups, and SUV single and double cabin)
XY: For the older vehicles pre 2009 and some new vehicles after 2009. it still use one to two random letters  to differ from other vehicles
XYZ: For the car from 2009 up to now use three letters to identify several things :
  • X : The region of the place where it's registered. For Jakarta, the region codes are:
T : East Jakarta
B: West Jakarta
U: North Jakarta
S: South Jakarta
P: Central Jakarta
R: Recode, from 4 digits into smaller digits (1-3) digits. i.e B 8785 EF, the recode maybe B 878 RAD

For Detabek, the region codes are:
E&Z    : Depok
K        : Bekasi City
F         : Bekasi Regency
C&V  : Tanggerang City
W       : South Tanggerang
N      : Tanggerang Regency, esp Pamulang and BSD area
  • Y: Car's type identifier. It's to determine which type of car you have. The CTI codes are
A: Sedan, registered after 2009
E: For any Sedan registered before 2009 and then re-registered in new area after 2009. For this, the previous license plate ends with two letters, the re-registered in other area, thus gaining a new sequence of ending letters consist of three letters.
C: Pick Ups or Box Car, registered in 2011 onwards
D: Truck Registered in 2011 onwards
F: Minibus/Hatchback/City Car registered in 2009 onwards

U: For any minibus registered before 2009 and then re-registered in new area after 2009
V: For minibus, city cars, and hatchback registered before 2009 and then re-registered in new area after 2009.
Z: For any cars registered in mid to last months of 2012 up to early 2013, apply to all type of cars, except Jeeps, SUV's and Trucks
Q: Government's Car

  • Z: Random letter to differ your cars from other vehicles
This last three letters are rigid for cars which have 4 numbers starting with 1. If the car's licence plate consists from 1 thru 3 number, the last letters are choose randomly or by the will of the owner. For this case the last letters can only be one up to three letters with various sequences. The normal sequence for 1 thru 3 numbers are :
the first letter is the area code where the vehicle registered
the second letter maybe the car's type identifier letters or random letters
the third latter is a random letters

This rules is also apply to the recode cars in which has the letter R for the Area Code. For Example

B 112 RAS

This license plate still legal (for 1 thru 3 numbers) even though the last three letters don't follow the sequence. This license plate may be bought and arranged based on the will of the car owner, which may indicate something about the owner. For Example

B 89 LTK

For motorcycle, the numbers 3000-3999 and 6000-6999 are followed by three ending letters. The first letter indicates the area where the motorcycles are registered. the last two letters are random letters. For motorcycles that have numbers 4000-5999, is followed by two random letters.
The next writing, I'll give you the more details explanation about the cars that belongs to CTI codes.
